Fahrenheit 451: Criitique
1). Montag doesn’t know the truth about the past of firemen, because all of the history books about firemen have been burned. He believes that homes have always been fireproof. He doesn’t know that in the past firemen extinguished fires rather than set them. This illustrates Bradbury’s message that books give us information, describe our history, and teach us many things. Books have a life of their own. Without books, people have a limited view of life and the world. 2) The parlor wall is a wall with a huge three dimensional television. Sometimes it displays scenes like ocean waves or makes a room look like all kinds of exotic people’s rooms. Also, people like Mildred can mail in box tops for a script. The script is written with a missing part that the viewer acts out along with the actors who are in the play shown on the screen. The parlor screen is like big screen television with virtual reality. 4) Yes, life has become even faster since the 1950’s. Technology has made our lives faster with faster cars, airplanes, spacecrafts, and trains. People can travel around the world easily and communicate with each other more quickly. We have next day mail delivery, instant email communication, cell phones, and 24 hour news television stations. Computers have advanced our lifestyles. Some work tasks like typing, writing reports, research, and communication are easily done by computer technology. In the 1950’s, most people didn’t have television. International travel and communication was rare. In the 1950’s fewer women worked and more stayed at home as mothers. In our world, family life is more stressful. More mothers work. Children have more activities like karate, computer classes, and homework. There weren’t microwaves or instant meals in the 1950’s. Cooking and cleaning took more time. Life is faster because of technology. 3) I think she is meaning that people don’t take the time to look at their surroundings and appreciate nature and beauty.
