Family Ecology
A family is “any sexually expressive or parent child relationship in which people are usually related by ancestry, by marriage, or adoption who form an economic unit and care for any young”. There are several theoretical perspectives involving the family unit, which aid sociologists in the way that the family is viewed. Each theory has its own significance in regard to better understanding families. However, this paper will focus on the Family Ecology perspective. This theory will be applied to the vignette involving Harry and Antoinette Creamy. Their family life will be compared and contrasted to my family life. The Family Ecology Theory is “how Families are influenced and influence the environments around them. Families are interdependent on their neighborhood, social, and physical environment”. Basically the perspective explores the families development being affected by the environment it resides in. .The interaction a family has with three major environments has a large impact upon that institution. The neighborhood they reside in, their social environment, and their physical environment influence the family. The neighborhood that the family lives in has a very large impact upon the workings o
f the family. For example, many families must cope with the threat of violence in their neighborhood. The family’s responses to the pending threats may make a family a stronger unit, or may stop the family from developing properly. If violence is a large part of every day life the family will not only accept it, but will weave violence into its own structure. Depending on where the neighborhood is also affects a family. If they are in a rural area family members are more likely to have better access to health care. Generally speaking, the children also receive a better education. Yet, those families living in more urban areas have less access to good health care due to impoverished conditions. Also, the children do not receive a very good education. Obviously, the neighborhood does play a large role on the interactions of a family. Finally, the physical environment surrounding them affects the family. They live in an urban setting therefore putting more stress into their lives. They are in a well-populated area, which can lead to a higher crime rate, so they have to be more careful to avoid acts of violence. Harry and Antoinette have been affected greatly by the neighborhood in which they reside. . As to the neighborhood itself, they live over their butcher shop in South Philadelphia First of all, Antoinette has lived in the same neighborhood for all of her life. She does not know anything else but her one home. In the world today this is not as common practice at all, but she is an older part of society that was used to staying in one place. The fact that they operate a butcher shop at all reflects the neighborhood they live in. For the most part, only older people will still use specialized shops such as these, due to modern conveniences like super markets taking over the market. Part of being in a public service industry as they are, is knowing your customers. Most likely, many of the customers come from the local neighborhood. This helps to affect the family in a social sense as well. Antoinette grew up in the neighborhood the shop resides in and has basically been in the same place all of her life. However, admittedly, life is now becoming more difficult for the couple. They are now grandparents and Antoinette loves to spoil the grandchildren. This South Philadelphia couple owns a local butcher shop together. They have been married for over forty years and seem to be quite happy with each other still. They met on a blind date in
