The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) gives homeowners and organizations the opportunity to build in areas that otherwise would possibly be too high of a risk for the individual to take on without government assistance. With this being a taxpayer-supported program, people who choose to live in these areas are causing homeowners, who know better, money and grief. While FEMA can’t control flooding, they can control flood insurance for property owners. Through a variety of facts and examples many people, including myself, have begun to question FEMA’s policy on flood insurance in flood plains.A common disaster dealt with by the Federal Emergency Management Agency could be prevented if they were to update their maps, and that is flooding. Flooding can be very destructive and there is little that can be done to prevent this. FEMA deals with all kinds of disasters, all of the time and the insurance that goes along with those. They are usually dealing with floods, because they are the most common. There is not a certain place that floods occur, but there are places where they occur more often. FEMA could prevent a lot of devastation and surprise with updated maps. From year to year the flood prone areas change. They need to periodically update these to help homeowners and businesses. With all of these outdated flood-hazard maps, people may be unaware that they are in a floodplain (Paige). This would just cause more grief especially to tax payers who support FEMA with money. It is also very dangerous for people to not know about the dangers surrounding their homes. Their “flood maps are so out of date that someday you could watch everything you own get washed away- -and you won’t have a dime of insurance to help you recover” (Razzi). Maps are important when you are buying a building so you know if you need to buy flood insurance or not. Without the knowledge of flood maps you could lose your property to water because you have no insurance against it. “One-third of the governments maps are more than 15 years old and [they] do not accurately reflect flood risk” (Razzi). How would you feel if you knew that you were using one of these government maps to choose if you should buy flood insurance, or even to see if you have to worry about water damage in the future? I would personally be pretty upset. After analyzing all of the information about the Federal Emergency Management Agency and flood prone areas, it’s clear that there was something wrong with FEMA’s flood policy. Homeowners should use their common sense when it comes to building in flood prone areas. Don’t people realize that they are just putting more stress in their lives by living in flood plains and by rebuilding their homes over and over again? Some property owners have filed claim after claim, costing far more than the cost of their homes “without taking steps to relocate or elevate their property” (Bradford). You would think that with the money that the government supplies them with they would at least put their house on stilts after the first flood occurrence and definitely after the second. They should realize that “we can’t keep draining the federal treasury; we can’t keep burdening the flood fund that is pad for by policy premiums, by property owners that know better” (Bradford). What makes me upset is that FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program are supporting people living in flood plains. They are doing this by providing insurance for people in these flood p
