Fated

Why do things happen as they do? For every action, must there be a cause? Do you control what you do? Is there a higher power that has already determined everything for everyone, or do people actually have a choice in their behavior? These are all questions people have been pondering over for centuries and questions that people still are pondering today. If we examine these questions and take the point of view that everyone and everything is determined, and something bad happens to that person, they can be viewed as a victim, a victim of fate. This notion and these questions are evident in many contemporary short stories and novels, in which their respected authors try to portray their main character or characters as victims of something outside their control. For example, Oedipus in Oedipus the King, Lt. Jimmy Cross in The Things They Carried, and Cody in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant are all characters that play the role of victim from outside sources. In the following paper, there will be an examination of how each of these characters can be viewed as victims of things outside their control, especially fate.

In comparison to Oedipus in Oedipus the King and Lt. Cross in The Things They Carried, Cody in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is also a victim of something outside his control. Being the eldest child, it is obvious that he is the one most damaged by the failure of his parents’ marriage, which causes him to become a victim of aggression and confrontation. He feels that it his fault that Beck, the father, left, especially when they bring up the arrow incident. Cody never really feels like a family as he expresses, “You think were a family…when in particles, torn apart, torn all over the place?” (Tyler 294). He never actually recovers from his father departure, thus making himself carry extra emotional baggage for the rest of his life. When the mother would explode in his face and tell him that he is not her favorite child, also played an important role in shaping Cody as an individual. In reality, Cody is a victim of his mothers and fathers ignorance as parents.

When comparing Oedipus, Lt. Cross, and Cody, a few things become a little bit clearer. All three characters had something in common. All three were individuals’ whose lives were determined by something outside their control. However, all three still had choices in their lives other than the ones they made. Oedipus did not have to go out and try to flee from his fate, when he could have just stayed home, Lt. Cross did not necessarily have to join the army, and Cody could have ignored his fathers’ disappearance and his mothers’ parental ignorance. Therefore, if we conclude that all
