The orgasmic experience, shroud in an almost divine appreciation, is regarded as the peak of one’s potential for sensuous pleasure. Physiologically, orgasm is a series of rhythmic contractions of specific sexual “target organs” paralleling a release of built-up muscle tension and genital vasocongestion, swelling due to increased blood flow (Masters & Johnson, 1966; Matlin, 2000). Orgasm is generally perceived as the peak of sexual experience, and the significance of female orgasm has been an opposing position taken up by researchers. This idea springs from the fundamental observation that while male orgasm is essential for conception to take place, female orgasm is not, but it is being said that it can help. I hope to learn what factors, if any, female orgasm contributes to reproduction or if it’s merely just for pleasure.

I will first explain the female orgasm and what takes place. Upon sexual arousal, a woman's heart beats faster and she starts breathing more quickly. Various muscles throughout her body tighten, breasts enlarge, and nipples tend to stand erect. The visible part of the clitoris also swells. Secretions begin inside and at the opening of the vagina. So what is the purpose of orgasm in women? Until recently all sorts of theories abounded, from the notion that it is a useless artifact of evolution, a signal to one's mate of sexual satisfaction and devotion, a mechanism to insure emotional bonding, to a way to have the woman to lie still after intercourse so that sperm might be passively retained. A woman climaxes anytime between a minute before to 45 minutes after her lover ejaculates, and she retains significantly more sperm that she does after non-orgasmic sex.

When discussing the female orgasm, Masters and Johnson continually stress that it is a psychophysiological experience, where the body reflects physically the subjective sensations radiating throughout the individual. Masters and Johnson broke the psychological experience of female orgasm down into three stages. The first is characterized by a feeling of suspension for a brief moment followed by an “intense sensual awareness” (p. 135) in the clitoris that rapidly spreads throughout the pelvic region. The second psychological stage of orgasm, as labeled by Masters and Johnson, is distinguished by a feeling of warmth originating from the pelvic region and spreading throughout the body. The third stage accompanies the involuntary physical contractions described above and is commonly felt in two parts. First there is a strong contraction felt in the vagina, which is then followed by a throbbing sensation that spreads to the pelvis and then onto the rest of the body. An experiment was done in 1982 where they tested pelvic contractions during female orgasm. Eleven women manually stimulated themselves to orgasm on three separate occasions. The pelvic contractions were measured by the use of an anal probe and a vaginal probe simultaneously.
