Ferrets

Imagine you’re on the brink between wakefulness and dreamland. You’re not sure whether you’re floating in the Milky Way, eating a mars bar or rolling around in you’re waterbed, chewing on you’re pillow. Then you feel something scurry up your leg. Bolting up in bed, you lift the covers and this is staring at you. This is my little toe biter, Teiko. Owning a ferret can be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. They will give you unconditional love and they are an unending source of laughter, if you take care of them right. Taking care of a ferret is a lot of work. If you have a pet of any kind you know what I’m talking about. I have been a ferret owner for about 5 years and I read anything and everything I can about ferrets. When you get a ferret you should have a basic knowledge of ferret health, be able to ferret proof your house, and provide ferret friendly toys.

First let’s talk about the medical aspect of ferret care

Like every animal ferrets need to be seen by a vet regularly. Baby ferrets called kits can be fixed at 5 weeks old and need a distemper booster at about 8 weeks. Male ferrets, known as hobs, tend to be larger than female ferrets. Their weight ranges from 3 to 5 pounds while

Teiko is a comedian, an escape artist, and a joy to live with.

As you can see ferrets need a lot of care. You have to see to their physical health, as well as emotional. You have to be able to provide a safe environment and an endless supply of entertainment. If you have or ever get a ferret be prepared for a hilarious, fluffy, toe biting family member.

Ferret-proofing the home is essential if you have a ferret. Due to their incredible curiosity and fearless nature, they will, if given the opportunity, get into anything. Some people like to cage their ferret all the time. If you do, wire cages with levels are what ferrets prefer. DO NOT use aquariums and cedar chips! I prefer to let Teiko run around the house. Ferrets are inquisitive, fearless, and capable of getting into places that you never imagined. If their head can fit into something, then the whole body can follow. Some people say that ferrets have the same problem solving capabilities as some primates. They are quick learners and have a great memory. Once they escape from a place, they know how to escape from it in the future. Their hearing, sense of smell, and touch are excellent, which is good because their eyesight isn\'t that great. To ferret proof your home, we suggest that you start with getting potted plants out of their reach. Ferrets love to dig in the dirt. (Tell about plants) Ferrets can not climb in the sense that cats can. If they can jump and get a grip on something, they will either pull themselves up or pull objects over and down. Items such as trash cans, tablecloths, laundry baskets, drink
