The Phenomenon that is James Bond
After seeing the new James Bond movie I was interested in knowing how the James Bond series of movies are second to none. James Bond was created in 1953 by Ian Fleming in the novel, “Casino Royale” and the first Bond movie came out in 1962 with “Dr. No.” (http://www.jamesbond.com/40th-anniversary/007faq/index.php) This year happens to be the 40th anniversary of Bond’s appearance in films and the Bond movies still create a craze. But these methods are really easy to spot because the movies and Bond himself was created to appeal to people of all ages. I do not feel as if the Bond movies go as in depth into where people are looking as the shows mentioned in Gladwell’s, The Tipping Point, but the creators of Bond have found other ways. (also from The Tipping Point) Similarly to the gold stamp Wunderman used in ads for Columbia Records, the Bond movies all have “gold stamps.” Each reaches out to a different group and draws that group in. The first “gold stamp” hit me very quickly, seeing Halle Berry on the screen in a bikini. All of the so-called “Bond-girls” are gorgeous, you never find James sleeping
The other “gold stamps” that I see in Bond’s movies are the toys and gadgets that he gets to play around with. He always has the best looking car, whether it can cloak, shoot missiles, or even turn into a submarine. You look around the theater and every guy’s mouth is wide open, drooling while dreaming of being in the driver’s seat of Bond’s cars. Then you have a watch that shoots out a rope that is strong enough to support the weight of a few people and that is also equipped with a laser that can cut through metal. I know that I am not some secret agent but I would still love to have the watch, as unnecessary as it is, it is still awesome. The stereotypical man loves tools and James Bond has the coolest tools around. For these men, seeing the James Bond movies is very fulfilling. They get everything they want: violence, sex, and a “vodka martini. Shaken, not stirred.” Also, there have been five different actors throughout the last 40 years that have played James Bond but no one seems to complain. So many Batman fans were appalled to see so many different Batmans in just 4 movies. But the difference
