Fabio

“We’ll be right home,” my father-in-law said as I was combing my hair. “Gabriella bumped her face, it looks worse than what it really is.” My father-in-law took my five-year-old daughter Gabriella, to his farm in Boonsboro. It is a place that Gabriella loves her Pappy to take her. It could even be considered one of her favorite things to do. She chases the cats, plays with the kitties, and feeds the horses. Usually she has a great time, but it just so happened to be a day that I will never forget as long as I live.

My dad came to visit me, which since he lives in Greencastle, it kind of a rare occurrence. I was talking to my dad, just kind of hanging around waiting to see Gabriella’s “bumped” face. I just happened to glance out window and saw Pappy and Gabriella pull in the driveway. He was driving like an absolute maniac, which is very out of the ordinary for him. He opened his car door and motioned for me to come over and help Gabriella out of the car. When I looked through the window and saw my innocent, helpless daughters’ face, I though that I was going to be sick.

This “little bump” Pappy told me about on the phone happened to be a huge black eye that was swollen shut, abrasions up a

After discharging from the hospital and FINALLY returning home, I got to hear the story that Pappy was so reluctant to tell me. He put her up on a horse. I mean a horse. Not a pony, like I was told in the beginning. A huge, brown, stinking horse, named Fabio. Fabio is an ex race horse from Charlestown, and apparently has quite an attitude. Gabriella was sitting on the horse when pappy stepped away and let the trainer walk her around the little track on the farm. Over a time frame of about a minute, the bright sunny skies suddenly turned gray. Big storm clouds hovered over the area and a small roll of thunder was heard. When the thunder rolled, the horse got scared and bucked up on his back two legs, and threw Gabriella off. Needless to say Pappy was reluctant because Gabriella was in his care when this happened, and he felt tremendously guilty. “Accidents happen”, I said. “ Her Angel was watching her today.”

Needless to say, I think that will be the last horse Gabriella will ride for a long, long time.

After arriving at the hospital, the hospital staff took her back to get a cat scan, an X-Ray, and an MRI. It felt like an eternity waiting for the test results. The doctors’ main concern was that she broke the bone under her eye. If she did, there was nothing they could do about it anyway, but it was just the thought of knowing that my baby had a broken bone in her body that I have been protecting and guarding for the past five years.

Gabriella is a little more relaxed now, and my nerves are starting to calm. I guess you c
