Dragons in Literature

Prejudice is defined as an opinion made without adequate basis. On Sep-tember 11, 2001, the World Trade Center was the target of a vicious terrorist attack. This attack was caused by prejudice and hatred of America. The attack struck fear in the heart of Americans who are not sure their government can now protect them. Although frightening in real life, these dragons are often used in literature to create realistic and interesting novels. Many dragons are used in To Kill A Mockingbird and A Lesson Before Dying. Grant and Scout face just some of the dragons, such as prejudice, fear and hatred, in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and Ernest J. Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying.

In the novels, Scout and Grant both face off with the dragon of prejudice. In A Lesson Before Dying, Grant faces off with prejudice at the Rainbow Club. He overhears two mulatto bricklayers talking about how they would pull the switch (to kill Jefferson) themselves. As G

rant describes them as “dumb as hell, but prejudiced as hell.” (198) Grant decides to get up and fight the “brick-colored bricklayers.” (197) He fights their prejudice toward Jefferson by telling them to stop talking about Jefferson. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout faces the dragon of prejudice when she goes to church with Calpurnia. Some of the blacks are prejudice against Jem and Scout. Lulu, a “tall Negro woman” who “seemed seven feet high” (119), tells Calpurnia, “I wants to know why you bringin’ white chillun to nigger church.” Lulu is prejudice against whites, although she has no reason to be so. This is shown by how the Reverend tells Scout, “This church has no better friend than your daddy.” (123) Although Scout does not directly fight the prejudice, she, in a way, fights it by not giving anyone a reason to be prejudice against her. When the church is taking up the offering, Scout and Jem give up their own dimes
