Stories of gambling and scandal at institutions of higher education have become commonplace in America today. We now live in a society that openly encourages gambling. Most states have lotteries, many have established sites for legal casino gambling, and the Internet has made gambling accessible to almost everyone. The increased media coverage of sporting events has also contributed to a significant increase in sports betting in the United States. Most often these accounts focus on college athletes and how they have strayed from the path of morality. Unfortunately, gambling is not an endemic reserved for athletes. This is an issue that affects all sorts of college students. The promise of quick riches is very common in college because these students are working full time on their academics and sacrificing their social life by having lesser monetary items. To prevent others from suffering the losses that many have already felt I offer my report, which tells the story of a group of college students, who all became entangled in the world of gambling.

Compulsive gambling is a progressive behavior disorder in which an individual has a psychologically uncontrollable preoccupation and urge to gamble. This results in excessive gambling, the outcome of which is loss of productive time and money. Unless treated, the gambling can reach the point where it compromises, disrupts, and then destroys the gambler’s personal life, family relationships, and “school.” All of these stories tie together in a way that disrupts our schools pursuit to strive for a higher education. Speaking for the Student Government Association, we hope you and your calleages will take this matter seriously and help form a gamblers anonymous hotline and clinic. Throughout his collegiate career Paul gambled constantly, while managing maintaining a grade point average over 3.3. After Paul turned 21 he would go to Foxwoods with his friends and get drunk while gambling the night away. He never even considered the fact that he might have a problem, even after his girlfriend commented that his moods were often determined by his success in the gambling forum. It was not uncommon for Paul to take a hard loss at Foxwoods, and then return there the following day in hopes of regaining his fortune. As Paul got more involved with gambling his drinking increased, eventually reaching the point where entire nights would be erased from his memory, as would the bets he had wagered.

Throughout the week Patrick would study the point spreads of upcoming weekend football contests. Come Friday night, Patrick would call his Saturday afternoon bets into his bookie. The following day his eyes would be glued to the television set. If Patrick took a hit early in the day he would call in a bet that afternoon on a late game in an attempt to win back his money. Even if Patrick’s bets won he would call in bets for the afternoon and evening games, hoping to multiply his earnings.

Tom didn’t really know what to expect when he started bookeying. He had about $200 in the bank and he figured this would be enough to get him through the first weekend of gambling. By Wednesday night Tom had made about $350, and he had decided that his gambling periods were going to run from Tuesday to Monday, with the hope that there would be a high volume of bets placed on Monday Night Football because it was the last event of the week. While his assumption proved correct, things did not work out the way that Tom had intended. He lost approximately $950 on that first Monday night.

A Harvard Medical study last year revealed that nearly 50 percent of college students in the United States and Canada spend time and money in casinos. Factor in sports betting, horse racing, lotto tickets and other forms of gambling and that number approaches 87 percent.
