As a young member enters a gang he or she must go through an initiation process that is brutal and sometimes deadly. These young people must go through rape and beatings that sometimes never end until the day they die in the gang (Savelli 2). In these initiations they must prove strength and bravery, much as Knights had to in medieval times. Knights were put through a series of tests that were not as brutal as that of gangs,

but still quite dangerous. They had to prove that they could hold up the name of a Knight in honor (Dersin 75). After making it through the initiation process, Knights and gang members alike were bound to there fellow members. They help up a code to honor and protect their cohorts through the hardest of times.
