Gangs And King Arthur's Round Table

The gangs of today reflect the Knights of King Arthur’s Round Table in many ways. King Arthur’s Round Table has been known for centuries as the home of the Chivalristic knight. These knights are men of strength and God that hold the ethics of the Round Table. The gangs of America in the twenty-first century are recognized as men and women that seek refuge in organized crime. Although both of these organizations seem very different, they hold qualities that are more alike then have ever been noticed before.

King Arthur first organized the Round Table because of disputes among seating arrangements during meetings. It is said that at the first meeting between the Knights, King Arthur laid down the rules of Knighthood. One of these rules being that every Knight would treat his fellow Knight as a brother. They were to protect each other and stand for what was just and right (Currin Knights 1). The gangs of today act in the same manner. As a young member enters a gang he or she must go through an initiation process that is brutal and sometimes deadly. These young people must go through rape and beatings that sometimes never end until the day they die in the gang (Savelli 2). In these initiations they must prove strength and bravery, much as Knights had to in medieval times. Knights were put through a series of tests that were not as brutal as that of gangs,

but still quite dangerous. They had to prove that they could hold up the name of a Knight in honor (Dersin 75). After making it through the initiation process, Knights and gang members alike were bound to there fellow members. They help up a code to honor and protect their cohorts through the hardest of times.

It is difficult to see the similarities between these two parties. To think that gangs are an offspring of the Round Table is an outrage. However the more facts to support this idea, the more is seems likely. As they both hold similar characteristics in leaders, ethics,
