George Orwell

George Orwell, of Eric Arthur Blair, was a

very complex and paradoxical figure. Although he started off as

an anarchist, after 1936 he became a firm anticommunist. He

persistently attacked the orthodoxies which he felt had corrupted

intellectual liberty. His powerful writing greatly influenced the
