After the Napoleonic wars, the Austro-Prussian War, and both World Wars, Germany, was divided and the largest state, which is Prussia dissolved. Most of the states were established after 1945 and they kept their ethnic traditions and characteristics and some of the old boundaries.

Federal Republic of Germany consisted of eleven states until it was reunited in 1990. These eleven states were developed in the western zones and had democratic constitutions between 1946-1957.
