A Comparison Of The Aims and Effectiveness Of Different Perfume Adverts Adverts are used to manipulate people’s minds by tactfully aiming them at target audiences. This is done by visual mechanisms which will, hopefully, appeal to them in order to sell a product. I have chosen to compare the aims and effectiveness of three very contrasting advertisements. I chose adverts for “Eternity” by Calvin Klein, “Coco Mademoiselle” by Chanel, and “ Addict” by Dior. The “Eternity” advert consists of two Black and white pictures, bordered in white making the two pictures stand out. The language used is pure, clear and sweet. The images used are simple and casual , portraying a happy, gentle, calm and relaxed environment. The wedding bands shown on the couple display a unity which embodies the label “Eternity”. The imagery is not crowded, instead it is peaceful and loving. The family captured on film are involved in a scene of easy living, this may be an indication of whom the fragrance is by aimed at. It would perhaps suggest an appeal to the middle/comfortable classes. People with hardships might find the advert laughable as they might believe that this kind of oasis-like perfect existence in-fact simp

It uses highly sexual visionary due to the posses of the woman portrayed and also due to the use of wet imagery. The advert portrays the woman in a club- like atmosphere which can be a subliminal message for its name Addict (the club life is linked to drugs and addiction to them). The posture which the woman holds and her hand pulling on her bottoms reflect a naked, out of control and crazy person. The advert is very modern with vivid imagery. The woman appears to be sharp, strong, unique, carefree (as well as free) and young. She looks as if she is losing herself in her addiction and forgetting her troubles, although not appearing comfortable, she is enjoying herself. When looking at the advert one can almost hear dance music. Its modern bottle is distinctive and despite Dior being known as a ‘rich’ brand it is quite affordable. The promiscuously daring advert would make the perfume appealing mostly to an adventurous young person, although it could be appealing to most people with a sense of escape. The perfume would be a suitable present for a girlfriend/ lover although is probably no the gift for a wife, even though a wife might buy it for herself. I found it interesting how very different three adverts could repr
