Got Long Distance?

Two young people hold each other close, tears streaming down both their faces as people bustle around the two on their way to catching an airplane. The couple attempts to say goodbye, but the words just don’t want to come out. “You have to get on the plane,” she sobs to him. He replies, “I know, but I can’t leave you.” He holds her close for one last time and boards the plane, knowing he won’t see her for two months, possibly more. For many freshmen, this is a common sight: high school sweethearts, trying to make it through college even though they have picked colleges far apart. When they arrive at school, there are two things every person on campus will ask them: 1.“Do you think he/she is the one?” 2.“You know long distance never works, right?” For the past nine months, I have been one of these many freshmen struggling to balance school life and maintaining a long distance relationship. Those two questions have become my least favorite words to hear. In this essay I will share the ins and outs of long distance relationships. For those who are in a relationship for the long haul, this essay will let you know you are not alone and maybe give you a little advice for when the going gets a little rou

Now, if you are one of those people who go around saying long distance doesn’t work, who do you think you are? Maybe long distance didn’t work for you, but as for the rest of us, we want to give it a shot for ourselves. Although, for the most part, it is hard to make long distance relationships stand the test of time and as unlikely as it may seem, there exist people throughout the course of history who survived being apart and even grew stronger as a result.

There may even be benefits to being hundreds of miles away from each other. This brings me to the second comment everyone on campus will say once they find out you are in a long distance relationship, “Do you think he/she is the one?” One or two three-hour plane rides and a couple hundred dollars is a great way to figure out if you truly love someone and if they truly love you. Long distance will kill anything that is not true love and if it is true love, to quote the wonderful movie The Princess Bride, “This is true love. You think this happens every day?” He is not going to find some gorgeous, blonde model, who loves everything he does to steal his heart away from you. He would not be committed to someone this far away if he didn’t have some serious feeling for you. She is not going to be swept away by the big, buff, loves to watch chick flicks, star quarterback of the football team. She has shared much more with you than a little physical attraction and some sappy movies.

Along with the phone bill goes time management. I know you miss him/her. I know you feel you need to talk to him/her. But really, talking to him/her for six hours on IM probably is not the best idea the night before your fifteen-page research paper is due. One of the keys to being successful in a long distance relationship is knowing when you have six hours to waste and when it’s time to stop using your significant other to procrastinate. I myself am particularly good at this one. “Oh no, hon, I’ve got at least another hour before I need to start working on my homework.
