With people out of work and home, they began to travel around to try to find jobs. With people needing money just to feed their family’s, companies to total advantage of this and sometimes only paid one half of what they would regularly pay. Steinbeck did his research on the labor force, which let him know the effect propaganda has on the economy. Steinbeck’s experiences with the depression and the dust bowl helped influence his writing greatly. Another thing that had a great influence was the Bible and Steinbeck’s beliefs.

Tom discover that Jim Casy is leading a strike, because the company is only going to pay half what it promised, which is two and one half cents. The strike Jim Casy was leading got raided and the police bust the strike and hit Casy on the back of the head, which killed him, Casy did not resist. Tom kills a police officer in a fit of passion. The company begins to pay half what they promised, just like Jim Casy said they would. Which is not enough for a family to survive on and the Joads have to leave again to find better jobs. Tom has to leave when his sister tells that he has killed two people. Tom goes out into the wilderness, and then comes to understand what Casy was saying. Tom wants to become a leader of the migrants, but he does not want to be killed like Jim Casy was.
