Statement on the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The speech that John F. Kennedy gave on April 4, 1968 in Indianapolis, was regarding the topic of the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination. Kennedy was boarding the plane to go to Indianapolis when he learned that Dr. King had been shot. He was coming there for a rally regarding his decision to run for President of the United States. He had a full speech prepared for the audience. When he arrived in Indianapolis he was told that King had indeed been killed. Kennedy was advised by the chief of police to cancel his speech because they predicted violence among the people because of King’s death. But Kennedy decided to go on anyway. The words that he had prepared were of no use, he didn’t know what to say.

The crowd of mostly blacks were still very happy; no one had told them that Dr. King had been killed. I guess what Kennedy had to say really was of no use because riots broke out in 167 cities and 46 people were killed, not to mention the homes and stores that were burned, 55,000 armed troops were brought in. This speech was very important because he was the first to speak to them about King being killed. No one had informed them about it, and he had to be the one to calm them down. Kennedy had to let them know that it is ok

On the intrinsic side it shows Kennedy approaching the situation with grace and respect for King’s followers. At the beginning of the speech he told people with “RFK for President” signs to put them down. Basically saying that it is not about him now, it’s about Dr. King anything else would be inappropriate. The speaker Kennedy is showing great reverence.

The speech was basically a call for non-violence. Dr. King stood for non-violence. Kennedy was saying that he knows that we are hurting but to act in a negative way would be putting King’s name in vain. This speech gives power to the people of America especially the blacks. It lets them know that they have the ball in their hands; it is up to them how they react. Kennedy in no way was dishonest in what he said; he was never misleading to me in his speech. What he stated throughout was true to me. He handled the situation that he was put in very well. He managed to get his point across and to do it tastefully. The American people should have come away from his speech with a sense of solidarity among each other in the name of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

ay to feel anger and pain, but to not react in a negative way. He understood their pain, because he too felt it. The best thing to do is say a prayer for Dr. King’s family and the American family, because we were going to need i
