T Heard The Owl Call My Section Three and Four

1. Three important events in this section are the new vicarage, when Gordon goes to school, and the problem with liquor.

The new vicarage is sent in by the Bishop. It was very hard to bring the vicarage in by boat. While they tore down the old vicarage and put up the new one Mark stayed with Marta. All the men, and even a few women, helped put up the new vicarage for six weeks. When the vicarage was done the Bishop came to bless it. The new vicarage means that the Indians and Mark are now friends and understand each other. (Craven 91, 93, 95)

Gordon soon goes to school after his mother died. He was very eager to go even though he was a lot older then the other three boys. Mark taught him all about the `outside world`. Gordon was to stay with the doctor and his wife and son while he attended school. When Gordon came home he had changed a lot. (Craven 106, 107, 109, 121, 122)

Another important event in this section is the liquor problem. The people of the village are now allowed to buy liquor. Mark is worried about the Indians `falling in the gutter` by drinking too much liquor. Big fights happened because of the drunkenness. By the end the Indians had spent about $6,000 on liquor. It all settled

1. Mark saw that Calamity Bill’s house had no smoke coming out of it so he went inside to check it out. Inside he saw Bill on his cot. Calamity Bill was hurt and about to die. Mark tried to get him to the hospital, but the ship couldn’t come. “But it didn’t matter. It was too late for help and Mark knew it, and Calamity knew it also”. Calamity Bill tells Mark just how he wants to be buried and Mark agrees. When Calamity died with Mark beside him Mark took him away with others too. (Craven 133, 134, 135)

2. School affected Gordon greatly. He looked and dressed differently, more like a white man. He got a lot of discipline and it showed on his face. Everything was uneasy with Gordon so different. “He is critical of ways he has known all his life”. Gordon decided to stay in the `outside world`. (Craven 121, 123)

1. Keetah prays for both Jim and Mark. She does this because she is worried about both of them. She loves them both and could never decide which one she would rather have live.
