Norman Conquest

How useful are sources E, F and G in helping you to understand why

the Normans took control of the land in England?

Source E is taken from the Royal Confiscation of Saxon Land. It is a primary source because it is written in 1068, which was at the time of the event. It is Norman propaganda and is used to justify why the Normans took control of peoples land. Therefore, it is biased. The source says, “…that Abbot Baldwin hand to me all the land which those men who belonged to St Edmund’s abbey who stood against me in battle and where there slain.” This is saying that William is going to seize all the land that the people owned who died fighting against him. The Normans conquered them and killed them, so therefore they have taken control of all their possessions. The source then says, “And I will that those men be now the abbot’s men, who were previously held by his predecessor, even as their predecessors were.” This is saying that the Normans are going to take control of all the land owned by the Abbot’s men, even if they were not killed. William is going to seize the land from all the people that opposed him because they no longer have power; he conquered them as a whole. “And I will not allow anyone to tak

e from them anything that I have given them.” This is the last bit of the source and is saying that William is the supreme ruler. If William gives anybody some land or a gift then no one else can take it away from that person. This shows that William is in control and has power because only he can give things and take things away. William used the land for his own benefits.

Source F is the creation of the Domesday Book, from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. It is written in 1085 and is about what happened in 1085, so it is a primary source. The source says, “Then he sent his men over all England into every shire and had them find out how many hundred hides there were in the shire, or what land and cattle the King himself had in the country, or what dues he ought to have in twelve months from the shire…” William did this to work out how much the land he owned and everything on the land was worth. The source then says, “So very narrowly did he have it investigated that there was not a single hide nor yard of land, not indeed one ox nor one cow nor one pig was there left out, and not put down in his record, and all these records were brought to him afterwards.” William made sure that everything was counted so that he could work out how much tax he could extract from people. He wanted to make sure he got all the money he deserved. This source is useful because it s
