Hamlet's Troubles
William Shakespeare is a master mind when it comes to literature and writing plays. One of the greatest plays he wrote is Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. In the play, Hamlet’s mind is drawn in many directions at one time by different forces. The two forces are, his Father’s ghost forcing him to kill Claudius because he murdered him, and the second one is the force of his love for Ophelia. The force from Hamlet’s father on him is an obligated one. When the ghost says “But know, thou noble youth, the serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown,” (I, iv, 38-40) Hamlet realizes that his uncle Claudius, who is now king, killed his father and he knows that he must kill him in order to avenge his father’s death. This is a heavy obligation on Hamlet’s part and he feels he owes it to his father to kill Claudius. When Hamlet gets the chance to kill Claudius he does not, instead he says “When he is drunk asleep, or in a rage, or in th’ incestuous pleasure of his bed…then trip him, that his heels may kick at heaven, and that his soul

Ophelia is warned by her brother Laertes to not be with Hamlet in any shape or form when he says “Perhaps he loves you now, and now no soil nor cautel doth besmirch… but you must fear, his greatness weighed, his will is not his own…” (I, ii, 43-44). Ophelia desires to be with Hamlet, but she knows that it is not the best idea to be with him. She is hurting to not be with him, but she must for the sake of her feelings and his feelings. Hamlet, on the other hand, doesn’t know how he is feeling about her and she is one of the causes that make him go mad. When he says “Get thee to a nunnery. Go, farewell. Or if thou wilt need needs marry, marry a fool, for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them…” (III, i, 137-140) does not know what to make of her anymore. He does love her, but he is sick of her because she is claiming that she never loved him when she hands the letters back to him. It was an insult to Hamlet and he says for her to go to a nunnery. At Ophelia
