Harriet Tubman was born on the Maryland plantation of Edward Brodas. Her and her parents lived in a quarter house. Which only had one room and there was not very good heating.
Harriet's name was originally Araminta or Minta. Minta's mother was a house keeper and her father worked in the field. In those days woman didn't sell for very much and Old Rit had a load of children. Also in those days when blacks had heard that they were being sold they would run away. If those people were caught they were beaten and then they were sold deep south.
Slaves didn't get very good clothes, they got old potato sacks for cloths. They also got whatever food was left. This had ment that Minta didn't get clothes until she got older. So when she was a baby she ran around naked. She learned how to walk on hard ground and she cut her first teeth eating a small slice of pork.
As Minta got older she grew more to were she didn't like the name so she change it to Harriet. Also she didn't like to do house work. She liked to work in the fields.
When she went and got her parents it took awhile before she could find away to go get them out. She went during Christmas when the masters family had a party. That way no one could recognize them. It was going to take a long time. She gets them to the Canada because they had the knew fugitive slave law was in effect. The Canadians decide they would not take part in it so the would not make slaves come back if they didn't want to.
Harriet went on her own to the north she didn't care if she was caught she wanted to go to the north. She stopped at many station on the way. She traveled on the underground railroad for a long time. Many patrollers were on the look out for her. She made it to the north without much trouble.
Her owner Mr.Brodars sent her to a new owner. The lady had a child and that was who Harriet had to watch. Every time the baby cried she got wipped. She got no rest since she stayed up all night so that the baby wouldn't cry. Harriet ran away so that she would not get beat anymore. But she didn't make it far because she had no f
