Clara was the origin of the female characters in the story and she would be the one to give life to her future granddaughters that would play a major role in the rest of the story. Alba, Clara’s granddaughter would be born into a world where she faced similarities and differences as well. Clara is born with special powers and spiritual intuition. She can see the future events before they occur which will decide her fate and the decisions she makes. Alba is not automatically born with the same intuition, but is “born lucky” and comes out feet first. She is later taught by her grandmother Clara to read at a young age and to commune with the spirits. When Clara began her silence, she began to keep a journal of her life and the occurrences around her and of those around her. In Alba’s case, she goes to her grandfather Esteban to get help to write the story of her family in order to reclaim the past to help her get over the troubles of her present situation in which she was raped and tortured. The actions in their lives were somewhat similar but not duplicates as Clara stayed silent for years, she kept journals. Alba on the other hand, never stopped talking but also resorted to the journals to express feelings and get over traumatic events in their lives.

The story was one of twisted plots and symbolism that is hidden within each character. Each character represented different points in the time of change in Chile
