In todays society, many single mothers have to depend on the welfare system and low wage employment as a source of income to support their family. In many instances this is the only means of survival and the only way they can afford to feed their families. Many of the mothers did not live on AFDC alone and did not report the extra income to the welfare department. The remainder of the income came primarily off-the books employment. This did not mean that they were living well just trying to establish more than the AFDC provides. There are many controversies with the system, fraud, abuse of the system may overturn and often reduce the amount of support the government offers to welfare recipients.
