Organizational Communication analysis

The purpose of this essay is to help us understand how people interpret self, other in the organisational context. The topic of my group¡¯s organisational analysis is relationship and social networks, and the sub topic of my group is superior-subordinate relationships. It is mainly focus on how management level communicates with subordinate level inside the hierarchical organisations. It is a mutual communication, it contain both how subordinates communicate with superiors and how superiors communicate with subordinates. My individual interview is to understand the way that employees communicate with their managers, and identify the implicit theories of communication from the interview transcript. My target organisation is Telecom, one of the biggest telecommunication companies in New Zealand.

When I start to analyse my interview transcript, first I want to state theories which my interview questions were based on, then analyse my findings with these theories step by step. The most important factor in organisational communication is the structure of the organisation. In our reading material chapter two: Organisational structure and process, it describes the organisational structure has effect on people¡¯s

Despite these electronic communications, they also have a lot of face-to-face communication. They have a group meeting with the whole team, which is about ten people every two weeks. And once a month they have a one-on-one meeting with their manager, which means they have their individual meeting with the team manager once a month. If there is anything the subordinate wants to talk about or he or she wants to see the manager, he or she can approach him and just ask him whether they can have a talk or not. They can talk to their manager anytime they want unless the manager is very busy. Here we can see face-to-face communication is still very important, because it can brings people together and identify problems they have in common, and make it major issue, then report to the higher management level by their team manager. This action was labelled in Eric¡¯s book as Tactician, which is the employee using reason to manage the boss. And also in Terrance¡¯s book, it is called coalition, which is employees getting support from each other, and influencing their superiors.

In conclusion, communication between superiors and subordinates is no longer a simple process as obey or disobey in hierarchical structure company, because the power distance between these two levels of people. How to communicate with each other effectively become very important to both superiors and subordinates. As a subordinate, different communication strategies can be used to influence superior. And developing these strategies become more and more important for an employee to survive in more and more competitive surrounding. Telecom is a very good example for people to take a look at communication between superiors and subordinates. As a traditional hierarchical organisation, it inherits the traditional communication style in high management level, but in lower management level, the communication is totally different. In small teams the communication between managers and employees are more like peers, it to some degree increases the production of the small group. Therefore multi-structure is helpful in big organisation, especially in communication between different levels.

There were two people resigned and left the company because of the team manager¡¯s treatment. So another problem emerged, whether complain is allowed in hierarchical organization. The reason why these two people did not complain is that they thought even they complains to the side manager, nothing exactly would be done. And the team manager would treat them even worse. Actually, no one told them that it was their right to complain when they had treatment. My interviewee knew her right, that is the reason why she was the only one complained this case to her side manager, and finally she was shift to another team. But why some people inside the organisation do not know how to complain when they get in troubles? The reason is that Telecom has not set such kind of rule for complaining for employee to take reference from when they are in trouble. This is another serious problem in communicating with subordinates inside company. It may cost the company lost good staff. I will talk about how to solve the problem in the recomme
