In part two of the book ‘The Depth of Sadness’ Mark is becoming more comfortable with his surroundings. He is getting used to all the of people and all of the people are getting used to him. “ As my people have always lived. They will live on fish, and clams, and seaweed. Later they will pick berries.”(73) In this quote someone is explaining that they are living as they have always lived and that they don’t need him to change that. That he was just there to help with their religion and not to change their ways and customs. That person was also explaining to him what their culture was and will always be like. But that it is changing very slowly into a modern tribe and if they don’t start to live they way their ancestors lived that they will lose their traditions and customs and their whole way of life.

can still find his faith and manage to find God when in need. Also that he is not afraid when in a foreign land to ask or Gods help even if he may be looked at as different.

In the fourth and final part of the book ‘Come Wolf, Come Swimmer’ it goes in to depth on what their winter is like that b4 it starts that the areas that aren’t as fast moving that gain ice need to be broken up and that people need to stay up in shifts to break it up. So that shows that the whole community work together to keep the river open so that they can get the supplies they need for the long winter that is to come. ‘To keep warm, to keep alive.
