Argentina

Argentina is located in southern South America between Uruguay and Chile. Argentina claims the Falkland Islands and other smaller islands in the southern Atlantic, as well as part of Antarctica, making it the second largest country in the continent. With a total population of 36,648,000, Argentina has over 34 people per square foot. The largest city, Buenos Aires, is the also the capital. 89% of the country is urban, with a mere 11% rural. The official language is Spanish, but many citizens speak other languages, as well. The highest elevation is Aconcagua, which is 22,834 feet high. The lowest elevation is Valdes Peninsula, and is only 131 feet high. The annual population growth has been estimated at 1.15%. The main ethnic groups are white (Italians and Spaniards) at 97%, while mestizo and Amerindian are 3%.

Before the English arrived in the 1600's, the Indians of the area simply farmed and were constantly on the move. In 1516, the first settlement was made by Juan Dfaz de Sol (Spain), while looking for a southwest passage to Asia. After being killed by the Indians, his party returned to Spain. In 1526, Sebastian Cabot, searched for silver after spotting the local Indians with it. As Argent

The Legislature, or the Argentine National Congress, is similar to that of the United States. Congress consists of 2 houses; the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The Senate has 3 members from each of Argentina's 22 provinces, the Federal District, and the National Territory of Tierra del Fuego. Senators must be 30 years old and are elected for 6 year terms. Members of the Chamber of Deputies must be at least 25 years old and are elected by the citizens for 4 year terms. The Chamber of Deputies consist of 257 members, and is known as the lower chamber. Voting is mandatory for all citizens between the ages of 18 and 70, unless they have health conditions or are too far from a polling place.

In the past, Argentina's monetary system was the peso oro. The peso moneda nacional, which consisted of 100 centavos, was the currency in use. Inflation in the 1970's and 1980's took away the value of the peso. In June 1985, a new currency called the austral was introduced. 1 austral is equal to 1,000 pesos. When this failed, the nuevo peso argentino, which was equal to 10,000 pesos was introduced in January of 1992. This peso was equal to 1 U.S. dollar. In January 2002, the government ended the practice of linking the value of the peso to the American dollar. The peso's value has been changing frequently, and is now 3 to 1 U.S. dollar.

ina did not yield the silver he had wished, Spain soon lost interest. Buenos Aires was founded in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza, but was left behind 4 years later to make a settlement at Asuncion due to frequent Indian attacks. The Spaniards hoped to set up a trading route, but this never happened; rivers flooded in the winter, and the water dried up in the summer. Because Argentinians were forced to stay in their own country, they used their natural resources to survive. Wild horses were killed for their hides, and were also used to transport items. Eventually, Argentina advanced in agriculture and industry, thus allowing them to trade hides, wool, and silver, for items which they could not make themselves. Since a trade route with Spain was time consuming, Argentina traded with Portugal at a small town called Rio de la Plata. Now that Rio de la Plata enabled a quicker route, Spain and Argentina were finally able to trade with ease. In 1776, the Viceroyalty of La Plata, with its capital in Buenos Aires, prospered under control of the Viceroyalty of Peru. In 1806, Buenos Aires was occupied by British forces. Although the Spaniards restored their rule over the country due to military forces, Spainfs ties with its American colonies were weakened tremendously. On May 25, 1810, a revolt occurred in Buenos Aires, and a junta was appointed to rule, rather than a king. Manuel Belgrano led an independence movement, and the royal party was soon defeated. On July 9, 1816, a proclamation of independence was signed in Tucumán. Around 1816, Indian tribes were defeated by the Spanish, and their land was given away. In 1880, General Julio Roca was named President of Argentina. Other presidents of this time period, such as Bartolome Mitre and Domingo Faustino Sarmineto, made educational reforms. Ballots were created between 1910-1914, allowing adult men to vote. Although World War 1 was taking place, Argentina stayed neutral. The worldwide depression of the late 1920's caused the military to take control, and General Jose Felix Uriburu was named president. The country returned to a democratic government during the 1930's. Even during World War 2, Argentina stayed neutral. Eventually, Argentina declared war on Germany.
