Each record is a daily account of what happened and a description of D-503’s thoughts as well. D-503 describes each event and then gives his opinion about each. There is a constant use of emotional description as well between each event. We is in first person and D-503 is the narrator of each record, thus quotes are used all the time to show what others say. The structure of Mother Courage is one that is based on Epic Theatre. This structure is very special because it has its ways of distancing the audience from the story and making the audience think of the themes of the play. Brecht has used interruptions such as songs and poems to give time for the audience to think of what happened and what the ugly truth is about war. One of the examples in Scene 3 is a complete interruption in which Yvette sings the song of Fraternization and it expresses the pain that the land had suffered. However, the importance of the song isn’t really much in its words although they are all rhyming couplets. Brecht has created this song just to let the audience think about what was going on in the previous scene, because when listening to a slow song, one doesn’t concentrate on the words but on the rhythm. Brecht has made use of these songs to manipulate the crowd in thinking of what war has done so far to the families. The words portray a destroyed land from war and after hearing those touchy words, one will start thinking of the brutality of war.

On the other hand we have Mother Courage which is a play in the form of Epic Theatre. The play is divided into 13 scenes and all scenes are different because they bring out different themes. The action is set in 1624 during the Thirty Years War in Poland. In this Epic theatre each actor represents something in society whether a class or position. The Sergeant and the Recruiter express themselves many times using rude language which allows us to classify them as a members of the working class or from the army and an example that justifies this is “God damn it, you can’t kid with me. We’re taking that bastard of yours for a soldier”. Another major element to the structure of Mother Courage and long verses and the use of short phrases. Finally, the use of rhymes in songs and speech has an effect on the audience because it distances them from the plot and from the actors and makes them think of the negative outcomes of war.
