It appears that the primary theoretical orientation used in Bourgois book is based on cultural production theory and also draws on feminism. Or put in his own words, he seeks to “ confront the contradictions of the politics of representation of social marginalization in the United States by presenting brutal events, uncensored as I experienced them, or as they were narrated to me, by the perpetrators themselves. In the process, I have tried to build an alternative, critical understanding of the U.S. inner city by organizing my central arguments, and by presenting the lives and conversations of the crack dealers, in a manner that emphasizes the interface between structural oppression and individual action. Building on the analytic framework of cultural production theory and drawing from feminism….”
Finally, I think that some of the dialogue could have been left out. While the writer is only reporting what was said, some of the language is abrasive and vulgar and really did not necessary add any real value to the findings of Bougois book. While I know that his reply would be that he is “just telling like it is”, sometime the dialogue cause you to lose sight of the purpose of the work, it becomes distracting. I felt sometimes that the work was trying to entertain me instead of educate me.
