Is The Current Movie Rating System Fair?

Most parents do not want their children exposed to sex, drugs, violence, and language until they are mature enough to handle these things. Thus the MPAA movie rating system was created, and it is a warning that informs viewers of the content of the film. As I’m sure you already know, the scale is G, PG, PG-13, R, & NC-17, with G being the most family-friendly, and NC-17 not family friendly at all. As a parent myself, I pay attention to what movie or TV program my kids will be watching. Movies have changed from when I was a kid my daughter’s age; the movie industry is showing a lot more in them from when I remember. I remember when the most I had to deal with was some foul language and a little nudity. Now those days are gone and with almost everything and anything is allowed. There are some observers who think that the current movie rating system is unfair, but my experience and observation tells me this is not the case. The reality is the current movie rating system is fair, as it provide a valuable service to a lot of people who wish to protect their children.

As I have already mentioned, the movie rating system was created as a warning to inform viewers of the content of films. While this is the case, there are many obse

By showing the reasons I believe the current movie ratings system is fair, it is my opinion that in the end that those observers will change their minds and see that the rating system is not unfair but fair. The rating system as we know is good as it is used as a sensor to help us decide which movie would be good for us as parents to let our children seen. The “G” rating tells us the movie is suitable for children. The “PG” is for parental guidance suggested; most get their PG rating for language or mature themes. A "PG13" rating is used for movies that have cursing and limited violence and are not suitable for children under the age of 13. The last two ratings, “R” & “NC-17”, are intended for those seventeen and older. If not for those ratings, who knows what stuff would be in the movies today, and I do not want to even think about it. As a parent, (it still sounds weird saying that), it makes me feel good that someone cares enough to monitor what a movie’s content is, without my worrying about whether or not my kids are exposed to them.

The first reason I believe the current movie rating system is fair is that is it limits the amount of cursing or violence that are in a movie, which is good if you are a parent. When my daughters tell me about a movie they wish for me to take them to see, I look to see if there is any cursing or violence within it. This is where the ratings system comes in handy to me. For my kids, most of their movies fall under the G or PG rating. Rated “G” movies are suitable for everyone. Hardly any violence will be in the film, and there is not offensive language. Most G rated movies are animation or children’s films such as Beauty and the Beast. The "PG" rating is used for movies that do not have cursing or violence and are suitable for children accompanied by a parent. These are the movies such as The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Big Fat Liar. I want to have my kids enjoy the movie without the cursing or violence the other ratings warrant. When my kids get older and I feel they are ready, then they will go
