Interpersonal Interaction

The interaction I chose to dissect is one that I was not a part of, but rather an observer. The interpersonal interaction involved two male college students. The interaction took place last Sunday evening. I was over a friend’s apartment in South Oakland, watching a movie with his roommate and his girlfriend, “Aly”. Everything was very typical of a Sunday evening until “Jim”; my friend’s roommate received a disturbing phone call to his cell phone. The caller who rudely interrupted our movie was “Jim’s” girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. He was using obscene language and threatening “Jim”. The phone conversation was kept brief, and the two boys decided to handle the conflict face to face, rather than over the telephone.

Immediately after hanging up the phone “Jim” slipped his sneakers on and headed outside to wait for “the ex”. With nothing better to do, the three of us remaining followed “Jim” down the stairs and outside where we waited. We did not wait more that five minutes when a pickup truck coming at a high speed jumped the curb and finally rested on the sidewalk which we were all standing on. From this point on the interaction was strictly between “Jim” and “t

Victor Frankl, a philosopher, focused on the search for meaning. He was a prisoner in a concentration camp during the time of Hitler, and throughout his stay he was able to look deeper into the aspects of communication. He describes a horrid time in the camps where one’s body began to die, but those “who were use to a rich intellectual life may have suffered much pain, but the damage to their inner selves was less”. { Frankl 47} He talks about love, and how his love for his wife kept him motivated and in turn kept him alive. “Love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire.”{Franlk 49}

Third is the category of small group. Small group involves between three to five people. Although the interaction was interpersonal and between the two boys, it can also be said that a small group was present even though we did not intervene. The small group consisted on, my friend, “Aly”, and myself. Even though we did not intervene, we still made an impact on the interaction. For example, “the ex” wanted to take “Jim” for a ride so they did not have an audience while they communicated. The audience he was referring to was us, the small group. Also, I am sure that by us, “Jim’s” friends, being present added confidence that “the ex” did not have, since he was outnumbered. This could have influenced “Jim’s” intense actions when he began to become physical. Also, “the ex” may have been intimidated to the point where he did not fight back, because he knew he was outnumbered, and he couldn’t win. In any case, the small group in this situation largely effected the interaction.

Finally, are the intrapersonal aspects, which may have influenced the interaction. Due to the fact that I was simply an observer to the interaction, and not a participant it is hard for me to discuss the intrapersonal aspects. Intrapersonal refers to talking to oneself. Throughout the altercation, I was personally hoping to myself that it would not get physical. At one point, when “Jim” had “the ex” by the throat I closed my eyes and told myself to calm down and everything would be okay. I have witnessed some terrible random acts of violence, and all I kept thinking was that I hoped this would not turn out that way. As for everybody else, I can not say what they were thinking, and even once it was all over no one talked about what their thoughts were at the time. For this category, at least my intrapersonal communication had no affect on the interaction, but it is hard to say whether the boys intrapersonal communication did.

Second, the organizational aspects that provide context for this interaction would involve more than fifty people. This category can relate back to the culture category because in this case the fifty or so people included are mainly college students. In this situation, if fifty people were chosen to have had an impact to the context of the interaction, they would all be similar in age and probably similar in morals. They would most likely be friends, and therefore college students. If anything this group of people would provoke the conflict rather than mediate.

Another category that would fall under the sociological approach would be stage models. First, the developmental models of relationships, express the stages of relationships. There are three main stages discussed when dealing with romantic relationships. They are infatuation, attachment, and detachment. The first one, infatuation is said to hold many emotions, and typically lasts from 18months to 3 years. This stage can be linked to biology. The second stage, attachment, begins at the end of infatuation. Finally detachment comes into play. In this stage it is said that the brain desensitizes where endorphins and other chemicals once played a large role, and therefore there is a decline of attachment. {Honeycutt and Cantrill 6}
