Jack Nicklaus

The Life and Contributions of Jack Nicklaus

To many Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer of all time. He has set just about every record golf has to offer. He has won just about every P.G.A. golf tournament the tour has to offer. Jack Nicklaus has done so much for the game of golf. Too many times people only see Jack for the records and the championships instead of the change that has taken place in the game of golf since the Golden Bear stepped to the stage in 1961. Nicklaus has done everything for the sport from writing best selling books to designing some of the world’s best golf courses. Jack Nicklaus is not just a great golfer, but also a man who has helped make golf what it is today.

Jack Nicklaus was born on January 21, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio. His father was a well-developed golfer himself. Jack’s father began teaching his son the game at the age of ten. Jack took lessons at Scioto Country Club, which was the closest golf course to the Nicklaus home (Banks, Julia pg. 182). Even though Jack’s father knew his son had the swing to be a great golfer he still wanted his son to try other things. So his dad talked him into going out for the track team in the seventh grade. Jack was a very fast learner when i

t came to golf and within a few months was already a good ball striker. By the age of twelve he could already out play his dad and could hold his ground against some of the area’s top professionals (Julia, Banks pg. 182). Jack was not able to play golf for is high school team because the school did not have a golf team.

Jack Nicklaus has had a big if not the biggest affect on modern day golf. Ever since the error of the bear golf has never been the same. Just think if not for jack there would be one hundred less golf courses in the U.S. Golf would still be a rich mans sport. Jack has opened golf up to many young people. He has attracted many to the game. Many people say that Tiger Woods has had the biggest affect on golf today, but if you ask Tiger who he watched and who his hero was growing up he will tell you one man’s name “Jack Nicklaus”. Without a doubt Jack is the most influential figure in the business, and even though he will always be remembered for only being the greatest golfer we all know he is so much more.

Jack did more that just build golf courses. He helped grow the game of golf. Jack Nicklaus wrote books such as “My 55 ways to lower you golf score”, “Take a tip from me”, and “The Greatest Game of All”. Each one of these books are among golf’s best selling list. He also has a golf school that is ranked among the top ten in the world. Jack’s school has reached out to many suburban kids and given them the opportunity to play golf.

Jack received a walk on scholarship to play golf at Ohio State University. While attending Ohio State he won the Big Ten title by fourteen strokes and the NCAA Championship both as a junior in 1961 (The Green Master pg. 2). Also, while at Ohio State he won two U.S. Amateur Championships in 1959 and again in 1961 (Safra, Jacob pg. 690). Jack would not finish his senior yea at Ohio State. He dropped out of school and joined the tour because the school denied him permission to play in an Australian tournament.

Jack Nicklaus turned pro at the age of twenty-one
