Jim Crow Era

One of the great challenges in America has been in race relations. The slavery issue

created a plague of sorts on American history. The Civil War put an end to slavery but

many other race issues were not addressed. It took the efforts of African American

leaders like W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington to make the strides needed to

bring true equality between the races. There efforts were not in vain. The sacrifices

that came with their leadership led to our present day society of equal opportunity.

Booker T. Washington believed in improving race relations little by little. He

understood that his passionate hope for an equal society was a process that took time.

He believed that only those who were extreme would try to bring change by force. His cause was what he referred to as a “struggle”. He was a patient man who was willing to compromise with the white culture of his time.

Woodward makes the point in The Strange Career of Jim Crow that Washington was “humble” in his approach. I slightly disagree with Woodward, because Washington was only trying to earn the respect and make some positive impressions with the white southerners. His approach was that of a wise
