Are Cars Too Fast?

These days it is not rare to see a high performance car like a V8 Holden or Subaru WRX, and when most people see them, they don’t think of it as a possible danger or threat.

In 2000, there were 1819 deaths in Australia caused by road traffic accidents, and it is estimated that a high percentage of these accidents were caused by speeds in excess of the legal limit.

Some performance cars can now reach 100km/h in less than four seconds. That is twice the speed limit for most suburban streets! Therefore, it is highly obvious that high-powered cars are more likely to be involved in accidents caused by speed. Drivers of fast cars put themselves in dangerous positions and due to their speed, they have less time to correct themselves.

There is no limit on the power or top speed of cars, and some manufacturers take full advantage of this and make their cars as fast as possible, which is there mainly as a sales pitch to

Car companies have recently began to design safety features that reduce the chance of sliding or spinning out of control at high speeds, but if you abide by the road laws and speed limits, these features are not needed. So why fix a problem with a lot of money when all you really need to fix it with is your foot.

So why spend money on too much power, when say a Toyota Corolla that has more than enough power, can go from 0-100km/h in 9.5 seconds, do almost twice the legal speed limit, get terrific mileage and fuel efficiency, for under $25,000 with all the toys.

These days the average family car has a six-cylinder engine. For example, the new Ford Falcon, comes standard with 180kilowatts of power, which is the same amount of power a high performance Holden had only four years ago. They can travel at more than twice the maximum speed limit at full speed and can reach the standard limit of 50km in just 3.2 seconds. And this
