Although, arguably the most dangerous computer hacker, Kevin Mitnick has turned his life around for the better. Kevin Mitnick’s early life helped shape his future dealing with computers and led him to a life of crime. The life he was leading was going to have to stop because he started hacking and breaking into computer systems. Finally, the law caught up to him, forcing him to serve many years in jail and never to touch a computer or modem again. His life now is a great one; he started his own computer security business and is on the right side of the law. Kevin Mitnick’s early life was mischievous and full of trouble. His parents were divorced when he was the age of three. He lived with his mom, who worked as a waitress (Macnee 197). Also he lived in San Fernando Valley (L.A), where he had very few friends as a child. Kevin rarely saw his father, and his mother worked long hours and double shifts. That left Kevin with a lonely childhood. During his teenage years he started his life of crime. He began phone phreaking which uses electronics to illegally access phone services. Now thirty-nine, Kevin Mitnick lives in Thousand Oaks where he has started a computer security company which help people find the holes in their network and helps them fix the holes. His business is a good career choice for him; now he can be around computers all the time. But the difference is that he is doing good with them now. After that he was put on parole which one of his conditions was he was forbidden to use computers until he could demonstrate that he was able to control his behavior (Macnee 199). In September 1992, federal officials, armed with a search warrant, raided Mitnick’s apartment. Mitnick, who was suspected of breaking into Pacific Bell computer, was no where to be found (Litman). But coded disks and documents provided proof of his activities. In November, a federal judge issued a warrant for the hacker’s arrest. Mitnick had violated the conditions of his parole. Aware that the heat was on, Mitnick went into hiding (Macnee 199). For more than two years, Mitnick managed to elude federal officials. But on December 25, 1994, he committed a fatal mistake. Mitnick broke into the home computer of Tsutomu Shimomura, a computational physicist who worked as a computer security expert at the Supercomputer center in San Diego.
