Courtier View of Love

Throughout the time of man, love has been a word that has never been truly defined. Somepeople view love as a physical aspect, while others seem to have the opinion that it is a more spiritual development. These two views are very evident in the two books of Utopia, by Sir Thomas More, and Castiglione’s TheCourtier, as translated by Sir Thomas Hoby.

Sir Thomas More defends the thought that physical attraction is what causes people to fall in love. This is in part to a ritual that is done before people are married.The ritual he talks about is that the bride and groom should see one another naked before the marriage so as to not have any blemishes underneath their clothing.At this time, he compares the couple to colts and how they are bought. “When men go to buy a colt, where they are risking only a little money, they areso cautious that, though the animal is almost bare, they won’t close the deal until saddle and blanket have been taken off, lest there be a hidden sor


Eventhough many different people may have many diverse views on how love should be found, no one will ever be right because it is everyone’s prerogative as towhich they choose. Times have changed and along with it the definition of lovehas changed. Now, America has accepted the fact that it may take a little physical and a little spiritual love in order to make relationships consistently work.

In modern day America there are numerous views on how love can be shown. In modern America, it is accepted that physical love is what helps to attain a lasting relationship with someone. However, once the physical part disappears from their lives, a more spiritual or soul endeavoring relationship is started. In a survey that I conducted, 19 people said that the physical aspect of a relationship played an importantrole in the decision as to whether they love that person or not. Only one saidthat it had no bearing on the decision. This one person believes like Castiglione did, in that the physical side should play
