Abortion
In the book “Arranged Marriage” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni one chapter talks about a story of an Indian women having to run from her family because they wanted her to have an abortion. To be more specific one author states in his journal “Factors Affecting Sex-Selective Abortions in India,” Dr. Retherford calls this type of Abortion in India exactly what the title states Sex-Selective Abortions. Sex-Selective Abortions are an interesting topic, especially when I started to read the story about abortion in the India culture. In this paper I will be explaining sex-selective abortions, referring to Dr. Retherford, Dr. Rita Patel, and Dr Joe Hubbard’s articles and journals, introduce the chapter in the book “Arranged Marriage” that is related to sex selective abortions. Understanding Sex-Selective Abortions in India is a lot more interesting then people think. Sex-selective abortion depends on the ability of a physician or technician to determine the sex of the fetus before birth, which is something that could not be done reliably before the invention of ultrasound, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling. (Retherford, 2003) The difference between a sex-selective abortion and an abo
In conclusion there is not a lot of proven material showing that sex-selective abortion in India is at a high, but it is on an upward trend. Within the past ten years, non-governmental agencies in India were founded to help reduce female infanticide. In 1992, families were persuaded to place unwanted girls in special cradles instead of killing them. The babies placed in these designated cradles were taken by the government for assistance; and many are successfully adopted. The interesting fact about this whole sex-selective abortion reasoning is that families that have two children that are boys are still among those of sex-selective theory. If they go into the doctor’s office and see that they are having another male then the male will be aborted just like a female would have if it were born first. I just find that to be very interesting. To think that this whole Indian culture revolves around correct birth order is so amazing. Reading about it in a story and doing intensive research on this topic is very useful in understanding India’s ways of living. Just imagine what would happen if American’s adopted these theories and beliefs of sex-selective abortions. You never know maybe one day this will happen? This idea of sex-selective abortions does not only happen in India but it is also widely known in Asian countries. These Asian countries, which include China, Vietnam and India, show problems with gender-biased killings of their children. Occurrences of unwanted sex killings have been on the rise for several decades. With no end in sight, infant girls will remain victims of murder (Hubbard, 2003). One of the main reasons for child infanticide (another name for sex-selective abortion) is that the one-child law was introduced in China in 1979. The reason for this law is that if it wasn’t enacted people would be sleeping on top of each other in just a few years. In 1979 the Chinese government ruled to restrict families to one child per household. This law was introduced to better limit the growth of population. When the law was introduced sex-selective abortions grew much higher. rtion undertaken for reasons that are independent of the sex of the fetus is that the individuals and/or families who choose sex-selective abortion would not be terminating the pregnancy if the fetus was not a member of the unwanted sex.
