Levi Strauss History

Levi is a San Francisco based company. This company is privately held, but they report financial information because some of its debt is publicly traded. Levi Strauss is famous for their blue jeans and casual apparel. Everyone can wear Levi; it’s clothing for the whole family. Levi Strauss is the inventor of this American garment. I will discuss the history of denim and the values and vision of Levi.

Levi Strauss birth name was Loeb Strauss. He was born in Buttenheim, Bavaria on February 26, 1829. His family owned a dry goods business, called J. Strauss Brother & Co., in New York. When the California gold rush made its way east, Levi decided to go to San Francisco to make his fortune by selling supplies to the miners who arrived daily. In 1853 he became an American citizen and established a dry goods business in San Francisco. In 1856 Levi moved the business to 62 Sacramento Street and then to 63 &64 as its trade and reputation expanded. David Stern, was married to his sister Fanny was associated with the firm. In 1866 Levi moved the headquarters to larger place at 14-15 Battery Street. Levi knew that there would be a great demand for “waist overalls” (that is what jeans were called). Jacob Davis supervised the first West


Coast manufacturing facility. At the end of the 19th century, Levi stepped back from the daily working business and left it to his nephews. In 1890 the lot number 501 was first used. By this time Levi and his nephews officially incorporated the company. Levi had been a charter member and treasurer of the San Francisco Board of Trade since 1877. He was a director of the Nevada bank, the Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company and the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company. He was a contributor to the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home, the Eureka Benevolent Society and the Hebrew Board of Relief. Levi provided funds for 28 scholarships at the University of California, Berkeley. During September 22, 1902 Lei began to complain of feeling ill but by the 26th, he felt well enough to attend a family dinner. That night he awakened briefly, and told the nurse that he felt “ as comfortable as I can under the circumstances.” Then he died peacefully at the age of 73. On the day of his funeral, local businesses were temporarily closed so that people could attend the services. Levi estate amounted to 6 million and was left to his four nephews and other family members.
