Les Miserables

Human injustice. The lifelong struggles of one man – Jean Valjean – and the people whose lives were affected by him. This complex story, with multiple ties in amongst itself, is Les Miserables.

Jean Valjean was sent to the Toulon prison in France for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s family. He attempted to escape from prison five times, which led to a 19-year sentence, and had finally been discharged. In prison, he became bitter at mankind and left it convinced that he was a condemned man.

Because of his convict status, he had a hard time trying to find food and shelter in the town of Digne, France. Finally, an old woman directed him to a house adjoining a church, where Monseigneur Bienvenu resided. Monseigneur Bienvenu was a bishop, and his kindness had earned him a reputation in the community. The only luxury items that he had in the house were some fine silver plates and candleholders, which he did not keep locked up. Valjean stole the candleholders in the middle of the night, and Monseigneur Bienvenu concluded that Valjean needed them more than he did.

When Valjean was caught in the morning and brought to Monseigneur Bienvenu, he explained that he had given Val

The police inspector of the town is a man by the name of Javert, who used to work in Toulon. His duty is to the law, and he has no sympathy for those who do not uphold it. He arrests Fantine after she attacked a group of people who were ridiculing her. Madeleine refuses to let Javert throw her in prison, because he empathizes with her. He promises to reunite her with Cosette when she becomes ill.

jean the candleholders, but he had forgotten the plates. This selfless act started a transformation in Valjean, and turned him into an honest man. He moves to a town called “M-sur-m” and invents a popular glass trinket (called “jet work”) that supplies jobs for the town. He, under the name of Madeleine does a lot for the town by the way of selfless deeds, and is eventually dubbed mayor. He even rescues a man who was pinned underneath his cart, and was adored by the town.

Valjean discovers Cosette’s love for Marius, and since she is the only person he’s ever loved, gets depressed and sits outside. Gavroche then approaches him with the letter, and once he reads it, is overjoyed with the fact that Marius is dead because then he will be the only person Cosette loves. Knowing deep down that this isn’t true, he decides to suit up and join in the revolt.

While Marius tries to find the girl, he finds out that his neighbors will do anything to get money out of anyone they can. So, he starts spying on them. Jean Valjean arrives at the house, and once he realizes who he is, runs to Javert to report the crime that is about to take place. Javert gives Marius a gun, and tells him to fire it when it has been committed. Suddenly, bandits enter the room, and Thenardier announces who he is and claims that Valjean “stole” their precious child years earlier. Marius is stunned by the news and doesn’t fire the gun. Javert enters anyway, and Valjean escapes.

Marius recovers, asks for Cosette, and they marry. He has never forgotten the two debts he now must repay – one to Thenardier for his father, and now for the unknown man who brought him through the sewers to his grandfather. Valjean never reveals that is was he, although he reveals his true convict status to Marius, who promises not to tell Cosette.

One day, the handsome Marius noticed the ugly little girl he often passed on the street had grown up. And he liked what he saw! This of course was Cosette. Marius began flirting with her, but the ever-suspicious Valjean, fled and moved away.
