Little Pay, Large Rewards
The long hallway became distorted and disfigured. Enormous books lined the wall in tall shelves to the end of the hallway. My walkway became dark and eerie; the books moaned and fell towards me. Running in horror and jumping over fallen stacks of literature, I raced towards the gleaming light at the end of the hallway. The corridor got longer as I ran; I tripped over the angry books. Tired and unbalanced, I fell. I paused and gathered my strength; then I paced to the luminous end. Before I knew it, I arrived at the light! I became absorbed by it as I passed through, and suddenly a golden radiant podium appeared. As I stood by it, my eyes adjusted to the light, and I saw endless rows of children sitting patiently in wooden desks. Somehow, I knew I was their source of knowledge. No one told me this. I just knew. I became overwhelmed with an indescribable sensation. A bell rang, and the children began to fade into the light. Shockingly, my sister’s face hovered over mine and said, “Get up. You’re gonna be late for school.” As I analyzed my dream, I knew the hallway was my journey, the books were my obstacles, the light was my destiny, and teaching would become my pride and joy. The teachers’ job is not an easy
one; they are constantly faced with threats of lawsuits. However, there are more positive outlooks of teaching than negative. Teachers today are getting the type of compensation they deserve. Benefits, such as pay and insurance, are improving. I should pursue a degree in education rather than in any other degree while attending Texas A & M International University. Aside from an increase in pay, insurance plans are improving for teachers. According to Donna Haschke, Vice President of the Texas State Teachers Association, “The only way we can recruit and retain the most qualified people to teach our children is to provide financial benefits and health care.” This is the main reason their benefits have improved. According to the Laredo Morning Times, Governor Rick Perry stated, “Texas will attract and retain more teachers once the first statewide health insurance plan for school employees takes effect next year” (Parrott). A lot is definitely being done to improve the accessible insurance plans. The Texas Senate and the House are both deeply involved in attracting more teachers. As recent as May 2001, the Texas Senate approved a bill that would allow school districts to join a statewide health insurance plan for school employees (Mabin “Solons”). The House is also passing a bill that will give each school employee $1,000 allowing the option for supplementary benefits, insurance for relatives, or to keep as salary (Mabin “House”). The better insurance plans will definitely make the teaching environment a better place to work, and consequently, a reason to go into teaching. Despite these abrogating factors affecting education, there are many positive aspects that one should consider when looking at teaching as a career. One is that teachers’ pay is improving. Teachers’ pay has been criticized for many years. It is theoretically, one of the main reasons there is a shortage of teachers. This is, however, becoming less of an issue. Teachers’ salaries have been increasing for the past several years. According to Sonia Vera, an English teacher at J.B. Alexander High, only five years ago, teachers started at about $26,000, while today, they start at about $31,000. This is approximately 1,000 per year, and it’s still going up. “The National Education Association predicts Texas will have the nation’s highest across-the-board raises” (Fikac). School districts across the state are receiving grants to improve teachers’ salaries. LISD’s finance committee received the opportunity to choose from two new pay schedules. The first would increase salaries by $1,500 for those with less that ten years experience. The salaries would increase by $100 for every additional ten years of experience. The second option would increase salaries by $1,500 with additional increase
