Little Secretaries

Look at our life today; look how it has changed.

Just one hundred years ago we could see O’Henry’s little secretaries typing for ten hours a day. Weak and deprived of rights, they could be easily dismissed, experience sexual harassment or encounter health problems. They had nobody to be protected by, nobody to turn to. Dark rooms, bad air, and sitting for whole day. It was cruel, but innocent world. Hours, after work, spent in front of windows of an underwear store, cheap food and little dark rooms with gas lighting in the evenings. When she stepped outside her office, she forgot where she worked, she stayed alone with herself, she was on her own planet, she was in her own world.

Today we can see the same girl in front of the same underwear store with a mobile phone in her hand giving orders to bank or suppliers. Life has changed. Rhythm has changed. Conditions have changed. For good or bad? Our little hero can’t be dismissed anymore, just because boss’s wife doesn’t like her. She can’t be forced to make things she doesn’t want to do. There are days when she works for 16 hours, twice more than she should, but she is paid for these hours. Her office is cozy, bright, and comfortable. She can be promoted. She can be s

People are not conscious of importance of relaxing gymnastics each 1-2 hour and there is nobody to explain them that it affects directly our abilities to do their best. As we said many offices don’t have windows (if it’s basement office or office on 24th floor), and we should not diminish the importance of lounge corners with a glance to a “big world” or, at least, green corners to relax and to get rid of tension. Form our side, we must realize an importance of it and teach ourselves to stop, to relax, to enjoy and come back refreshed and cheerful. Work can wait!!! You’ll perform it better if you’ll be in peace with yourself, no anger, and no reproofs from you boss. It’s so easy to come back home with smile; we just must learn to stop on time.

To keep things far from such situations there are some helpful solutions, which are not difficult to perform and maintain. A culture should be developed where staff trust each other and recognize each other’s contributions. Giving staff the chance to influence change makes them more involved. Staff should have a clearly defined role and responsibilities. It should be supported given feedback and encouraged, even when things go wrong. It’s good to involve staff and value diversity. Demands such as workload and exposure to physical hazards should be checked carefully; as long as control - how much influence workers have in the way they do their work. Relationships - covering issues like bullying and harassment another important point. Managers should know whether the workers understand their role in the organization and that conflict in their role is avoided. To finish with support from colleagues and managers as very significant part of peace on the work place; include training to give workers the skills to perform their task and individual factors - catering for individual differences (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, 2001).

But not only woman are suffering. There is other serious problem, which affects all of us, with no consideration of sex or age. A new trend of basement offices or upper floor of skyscrapers has lots of serious disadvantages. At the first glance, basement office is ideal solution, because it’s much more cheaper in rent, offer to employees a big variety of facilities and solve space problems. But on the other hand air circulation in all (!) of them is bad (it causes inhalation disorders) and artificial lighting badly affects people’s working abilities. The same about high building in which you can’t open windows to take some fresh air.

There is no one-way solution. It sounds like we need to make a revolution to change things, but history has proved that revolutions do not always bring good. It sounds like we should change ourselves, but to really change something we must do it together, for the meantime we are killing each other. It sounds, probably, like we need a Messiah, but he never comes.
