Even though marijuana is illegal, people have shown that it has been very beneficial to them. It has been used to aid people who suffer from various diseases. It helps AIDS and cancer patients surpass pain, vomiting, nausea, and boosts their eating habits. It improves the environment (Boje 46), combats weight loss, and eases severe headaches. Larry, a former student, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical marketer, has been experimenting on a treatment for obesity. He is developing a drug called rimonabant, which is the generic name (Goetzl 8). The company that is working with Sanofi on this experimental drug believes “that if smoking pot makes people hungry, a compound that blocks the hunger inducing effects of marijuana could make a great diet drug” (Hovey D2). An active compound in marijuana effects a part of the brain, which are called canabinoid receptors. The receptors control craving and dependence, such as appetite. The creator of the drug wants to find out how marijuana affects this part of the brain and why it temporarily blocks one’s appetite (Naik D3). Smoking pot seems to be more of a medical benefit than a bad thing. It has helped patients with various diseases and even helped with weight control. It has been very beneficial in controlling pain.
