In the late 1980‘s a little known T.V. corporation wanted to make a dent in T.V. history, along with “All in the Family” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” The name of the Corporation was Fox and they were presented with an idea for a pilot by two directors whos names are Gerry Cohen and Amanda Bearse. They had an idea to create a show that was not like any other sitcom on the air at that time. When the two directors brought their idea to Sony studios they realized that they had some pretty controversial material in this new show. However they continued to film the show. When the show aired in 1987 it achieve low ratings for the few seasons. This still did not change the fact that the show was controversial. It struck a nerve in a women named Terry Rakolta. Rakolta wrote “...the show is out of line for public television and should be taken off the air.” What Mrs.
Married with Children broke the ground for crude humor in prime time and many people, including the producers themselves, had their doubts on this show. The show lasted 11 seasons with a total of 258 episodes, all of them pushed the envelope. And even today if you wanted to catch “Married with Children” you can find Fox playing reruns during the day. Towards the end of the shows run, Ed O’Neill was getting paid 500,000 dollars an episode, while the other cast members salary started rise as well. These rise in salaries maid the show expense to keep on the air as well as a ratings drop. So in 1997, Fox cancelled “Married with Children.” When it was canceled it was one of the 10 longest running shows on T.V. It has been said to be one of the greatest shows on T.V. Not because of camera work or lighting but because of the righting. A show like that only comes around a few times.
