Lastly, from all the information I gathered and researched, I have reflected on my family’s approaches and attempts to help Brandi work though her situation. I think if we had been better educated on the actual psychological problems she was dealing with, we might have been better able to aid in her recovery. It has been extremely difficult for everyone involved to understand and accept her actions purely because no one recognized the thought processes, or lack thereof, behind her choices. In conclusion, I have realized that Brandi’s difficulties may have begun long before anyone ever noticed and took action to get her treatment. Therefore, this may be why treatment thus far has, for the most part, failed.

Finally, the last researched topic I will briefly mention is future problems associated with antisocial behavior in adolescents. Several articles obviously reiterated the same issues that adolescents are affected by, so I focused on the differing aspects and problems of antisocial behavior in adulthood. The majority of people suffering from conduct disorder will have future mental health problems, a higher risk of physical assault, sexual risk taking, employment difficulties, and physically punitive parenting behavior. There are also several factors that could cause partner relationship problems. For example, partner violence and victimization, attachment to the partner, problems with relationship maintenance, ambivalence, and interpartner conflict (Woodward, 2002). Lifelong social exclusion and personal distress are also associated with future problems of antisocial behavior (Scott, 2001).

On the other hand, conduct disorder may also develop outside the home environment. School settings, for example, can promote antisocial behavior by creating a punitive atmosphere for adolescents. In his article, Antisocial Behavior: Its Causes and Prevention Within Our Schools, G. Roy Mayer describes the components of these environments which includes: “an over-reliance on punitive methods of control, unclear rules for student deportment, weak or inconsistent administrative support for staff in carrying out student discipline, academic failure experiences, not assisting students lacking critical social skills that form the basis of doing well academically and relating positively to others, a misuse of behavior management procedures, and a lack of student involvement (Mayer, 2001).” Lastly, I would like to point out that conduct disorder is also associated with increased levels of emotional distress (Pardini, 2003).
