Matrix Philisophical Analisis

Philosophical Analysis Of The Matrix

Throughout our world society has become more and more dependent on television and the media for entertainment. A constant controversy that continuously arises is the lack of intelligent or intellectual thoughts in television and the media. One exception to this would be with the movie The Matrix, which holds many diverse philosophical and intellectual ideas that philosophers held hundreds of years ago. For example well known philosophers Plato, Descartes, and Berkeley grasped many of the complex thoughts and ideas that were portrayed in The Matrix. Although in The Matrix many of the ideas are harder to grasp unless many of the same ideas held by philosophers are understood.

In the movie The Matrix it seems that the idea that sensible objects like gravity and physics are merely ideas. "The objects of human knowledge… are…ideas."(Berkeley). By this it is easy to see that many rules can be broken by putting aside interpretations on ideas and seeing things the way you desire to see them. Berkeley saw this as the understanding that what we perceive reality is as we perceive it to be. Heat for example does it really exist or is it just our perception of what heat would feel like? When expos

ed to heat everyone feels pain , Berkeley argued heat as it is perceived is nothing more than an idea is a persons mind. Berkeley also believed in subjunctive idealism which explains that only a persons mind, thoughts, and feelings are real. This is understandable because a persons mind unlike the physical body has no limitations. Unlike the body the mind has the ability to go without any boundaries including a persons thoughts, interpretation, and feelings. Berkeley also believed that since even our best methods for learning about the world sometimes fall short of being perfect certainties it is better to suspend belief than to rely on the products of reason. This view considers Berkeley to be a skeptic never really knowing what to believe because there never really is anything to prove for certain anything.

Although at first sight many of the philosophical ideas held in the movie The Matrix are very distorted and hard to see after understanding the philosophical interpretations of these ideas from Plato, Berkeley, and Descartes it is easy to relate the plot of the movie to their philosophical views. Although people never seem to realize it there are many views we hold today as a society that were once seen by philosophers who were around hundreds of years ago. It is important to see that many of the ideas and interpretations we understand today were originally formed hundreds of years ago by intellects who have not experienced half of our society today, that’s why it is important to respect and understand their brilliance with
