Sigmund Freud first used defense as a psychoanalytic term, butdid not break the notation into categories, viewing it as a single discovery of repression. In psychoanalyis, any of a variety of unconcious personality reactions which the ego uses to protect the concious mind from threatening feelings and perception. As a part of the never ending interplay between id, ego, and superego, the mind must constantly repress anxiety causing impulses of memories. This repression often tenuous and difficult to maintain. In order to sustain this repression and fend off anxiety, the ego employs several defense mechanism. These mechanisms help to maintain the stability and sanity of an individual. The conflict which exists between the id, ego, and superego, undoubtedly result in some degree of anxiety of stress. without a mechanism of protection against these anxiety, it could present a threat to mental health and stability.
