Many people who have cancer take chemotherapy. Chemotherapy causes great pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and vomiting. According to Ed Rosenthal, “Marijuana stimulates the appetite and alleviates nausea and vomiting. People undergoing chemotherapy find that smoking marijuana is an effective anti-nauseant – often more effective than mainstream medication.” (Rosenthal 68) Chemotherapy causes unbearable pain. To deny a person going through that agony of the drug that will help to cure them is wrong. As Richard Brookhiser, the senior editor of National Review stated before a congressional committee “Because of the marijuana, my last two courses of chemotherapy were almost nausea free. Plenty of sick people get arrested, and plenty go to jail for using marijuana, the law disgraces itself when it harasses the sick. Let me assure you that whatever you think now…if that moment comes to you, you will turn to marijuana.” (Dickinson, 135) Is that an accurate statement?
