Mummification
Good afternoon everyone, my name is Christina Panahon. Did you know that there is a way to physically pull your brain out through your nose?? Well, that process was commonly used when preparing a mummy, which brings me to my topic. The Mummification Process. Mummification is the preservation of a body, either animal or human. By mummification, the Egyptians believed they were assuring themselves a successful rebirth into the afterlife. At first the mummification process was only available to the Kings, but over time it became available to everyone. The process of mummification has two stages. First, the embalmment of the body. Then, the wrapping and burial of the body. The first step in mummification is embalming the body. By eliminating moisture, you have eliminated the source of decay. They dried the body by using a salt mixture called natron. Natron is a natural salt found along the Nile river . The Egyptian climate lent itself well to the mummification process, being both very hot and dry. First the body was taken to the tent known as \'ibu\' or the \'place of purification\'. There the embalmers wash the body with good-smelling palm wine and rinse it with water from the Nile. The first organ removed is the brain. A larg
The second step to mummification is the wrapping and burial of the body. First the head and neck were wrapped with strips of fine linen. Each strip of linen had in scripted ancient hieroglyphics. These amulets were small trinkets or charms meant to protect the body from evil spells or actions. The ‘Isis knot\' amulet was meant to protect the body. The \'Plummet\' amulet was supposed keep the person balanced in the next life. Finally the body was covered again with good-smelling oils. It is now ready to be wrapped in linen. After being individually preserved, the organs were stored in a special canister called The Canopic Jars of Mumab I. The lids of canopic jars were shaped like the heads of Egyptian gods, the four sons of Horus. They are the guardians of the entrails. The canopic jars with their contents would be placed in the tomb with the mummy The Four Sons of Horus: Imset (guardian of the liver), Duamutef(Stomach),Qebehsenuf (Intestines), Ha\'py(lungs ). The body had been cleaned, dried and rubbed with good-smelling oils and was ready to be wrapped in linen. At each stage of wrapping, a priest reads spells out loud this whole procedure could take as long as fifteen days. These spells will help ward off evil spirits and help the deceased make the journey to the afterlife. The arms and legs were tied together. A papyrus scroll with spells from the Book of the Dead was placed bet
