Biblical Reference to Justice vs. Revenge

Consider the works of biblical essayists who use Christian paradigms to enhance the social debate. Examples abound: SIX YEARS AND FIFTY-THREE DAYS after taking the lives of 168 men, women, and children, a young man who hated America was executed for his crime. He had rented a truck, filled it with fertilizer-based explosives, and detonated the make-shift bomb in front of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Six years and fifty-three days is a long time to wait for justice. The defendant strung out the appeals process for awhile, and then abruptly ended his requests. He went out rather quietly, but still remorseless and defiant. He boasted that even after the government took his life, the score would still be 168-to-1.

Many of the victim's families and some of the survivors witnessed this young man's execution, and were asked afterwards if his death gave them any sense of closure. Some felt that it did. They were relieved to know that this particular person was silenced, and could not longer hurt them with his arrogant words of defiance and the reduction of their lost children to "collateral damage." Some bristled at the very concept of closure, knowing that the consequences of this angry man's evil actions would s

tay with them the rest of their lives. A few of those who watched the lethal injection said, in essence, "That's it? That's all there is? He just falls asleep and I'm left with all of this pain?"

"Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord" (Rom. 12:19).
