Mideval War Horse

The warhorse of medieval Europe is a unique animal that was born out of a need for horses larger, stronger, and faster. It took generations upon generations of breeding to produce a horse that could meet the needs of the knight of the latter middle ages. It had to carry men in armor, wear armor, and be a weapon. These horses had humble beginnings in Asia and ended in the beautiful horse breeds that are present today. They have a history as unique as the men they carried; they were at the top of the known world only to be beaten by the invention of gunpowder and the rise of new methods of fighting brought in by foreign horsemen.

The horses of the early middle ages are still found today. In the early middle ages the Vikings made settlements in Iceland and brought this horse where it maintained purity for over 1,000 years and remains one of the purest breeds today. These horses became what would Charlemagne would ride into battle and horsemen of the early middle ages would develop after contact with the moors and their Arabians the horses that would make up the horses of fame from the latter middle ages to the present.

Genghis Kahn took the tribes that maintained the sue do religious relationship with their horses and brought them together to form the fighting force that maintained a larger empire than the world had ever seen or has since. He used these horsemen to form the first “Pony Express” that could make a ride from Damascus to Karakorum, 3,500 miles, in two weeks. By the death of Kahn these rugged horsemen had maximized their territories in Asia and where well on their way to eastern Europe.

When the Mongols began their invasions it opened up the weaknesses of the knights and their horses. The Mongols were a unique breed of people whose life revolved around their horses that brought them to the forefront of horse warfare. Their “ugly little horses” were bred for performance not for their appearance, often shaggy, short legged, and bull necked. They preferred to ride mares to supply milk for long trips; they had wooden saddles and short stirrups to keep a solid seat at high-speed turns required hunting and war. The mares could often 662# of milk a year, and during the grass-growing season they would be milked 4-5 times a years.
