College Essay

In my lifetime, many events that have taken place have affected me, however the most powerful event in my lifetime was the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. It was indeed a day no one will ever forget. I still remember the day perfectly as if it were yesterday, even two years after it occurred. It was a Tuesday, and at 7 am, I went to first period English and then to second period social studies, just like any other day. At the end of social studies class the teacher made an announcement that a plane had apparently crashed into the world trade center however no other information was known at the time. I initially thought that a small plane leaving a nearby airport had accidentally crashed into the towers. The thought that it was a terrorism attack hadn't even crossed my mind. I left Social Studies class and as I walked to 3rd period health there was some talk of the crash; yet no one had any exact details. In the beginning of that period, the teacher announced that a second plane had hit the other tower. At this point it was obvious that a terrorist attack was underway. I then went to 4th period and by that time we were informed that one building had already crumbled to the ground and the other one would soon follow. The school day went on yet no teacher taught; instead every class consisted of a class discussion of the devastating events that had occurred earlier that day. .
It was at this point that I realized the impact that this would have on my life. Although I didn't have a family member directly related to the twin towers attack, many of my friends did and it was a hard time for everyone. People I was friends with had known people who were injured and even killed in the attack, and it was difficult for me to understand what it felt like for them, since I fortunately didn't know anyone firsthand involved in the attack. In the days after the event, our nation pulled together unlike anything I have ever witnessed before, all showing support and sympathy for the horrors that had taken place.
